Gecko
Nibley 2023
Gecko is an act we have wanted to bring to Nibley for many years, and we are delighted to be able to add him to the increasingly high quality line up of the Cheshire Cat Stage. Gecko is a London based artist, his playful lyrics cover the big things in life; think iPhones, Libraries & Guanabana fruit juice to name but a few.
Gecko will be heading over from his performance at St Pauls festival Bristol to join us. He has previously appeared at Glastonbury, Bestival, BBC Radio 1, 6 Music, BBC Scotland, BBC London & the Edinburgh Fringe. He has shared stages with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Loyle Carner, Tim Minchin & Billy Bragg. In 2020 Gecko appeared on BAFTA winning Sky TV show 'Life & Rhymes' with Benjamin Zephaniah. In 2021 Gecko received over a million views on TikTok causing a stir with his song for 'Laika' the dog sent to space & his feminist retelling of 'Rapunzel'.
His many glowing reviews include;
Huw Stephens, BBC Radio 1; "It made me instantly happy when I heard it'
Benjamin Zephanian; 'He's a work of art.'
The Telegraph ★★★★ 'Witty'
Radio Times 'Whimsical rhyming stories'
American Songwriter ★★★★ ‘Gecko’s songwriting sparkles in cosmic starbursts…his vocal radiates with sharp, vibrant colours…leaving you both gleeful and melancholic’
John Kennedy, Radio X 'Absolutely brilliant'
Gary Crowley, BBC Introducing 'Guaranteed to put a smile on even the grumpiest of faces...an absolute favourite'
Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music 'Just completely charmed me...I think he's quite brilliant'
The Morning Star; 'By a country mile, though, my album of 2017 is Volcano by Gecko...It’s a sumptuous feast of lovely melodies and cascades of sweet and clever words, superficially often seemingly inconsequential but with serious undertones.
★★★★ Broadway Baby; 'Raising a laugh and a lump in the throat all at once is a good trick – possibly the best. Gecko makes it look easy. A gifted young comic songwriter with charm and style to spare'
