Festival Strategy

March 30th, 2011

Target Audience:

We are a Family Festival primarily (everybody is welcome but we want a safe, secure event for people with young children)

Atmosphere:

The key words we associate with Nibley are Friendly, Safe, Clean, and most importantly Magical – we want to wow you as our customer!

Type of Music:

We tend to have original music rather than covers bands, the musical styles are incredibly varied but we know what our customers want – top quality bands that know how to get a festival crowd going. Let us entertain you!

Pricing:

We pride ourselves on fair pricing versus other music festivals. We want a family to be able to come along and have a great day without feeling they have been ripped off. We are a proper music festival (not a village fete), so we do have fairly high costs we have to cover, but as a not-for-profit organisation we want you to come back year after year so we will keep costs down where we can.

Environmental Policy:

We know every music festival has a carbon footprint (we are no different), and so we will continually strive to become greener where we can – reducing food miles, recycling our waste and encouraging people to car share for example.

Crowd Numbers:

The festival grew to 2,500 people in 2010 and will continue to grow gradually for a few more years.  We will keep a critical eye on numbers and make sure it never gets too big.

Types of Bands (how big/famous as opposed to musical styles):

We get bands that pass our stringent quality tests! Most people will probably have heard of our headline acts. If you are really into your music then you will have come across many of our acts at much bigger festivals, being played by the likes of Steve Lamacq on national radio or reviewed by the likes of NME, Kerrang. or Q. Some bands are hugely talented but yet unknown. Our acts come from all over the country and internationally – we are lucky in that we have already forged a reputation for good quality and we tend to be inundated by requests to play, but we are very picky!

What are we doing the festival for?

The festival is run exclusively by volunteers that work throughout the year because we love music. We are a not-for-profit organisation applying for charitable status. Any proceeds either pay for the day itself, help fund even more fun for next year or are handed out to deserving causes. We also allow community groups/charities to fundraise through the running of stalls etc. Where we are able to donate funds we will try and fund village needs first, then causes in the outlying area and if we have money left over we will support charities we are associated with elsewhere in the world. Our primary aim though is put on the best little show around!

Not Made In China

March 16th, 2011

notmadeinchinaguitar From the sunny south coast of England, come Not Made In China. An upbeat angular 4-piece pop band with tunes to put a smile on your face.Recalling the sound of The Smiths (Marr riffs rather than Morrissey durge), Paul Simon, and Kirsty MacColl to name a few, but creating a joyous noise all of their own. Experienced around the festival circuit, Not Made In China’s interweaving guitar melodies, soaring harmonies, afrobeat drumming, and bouncing bass lines will surely get stuck in your skull.  “Their debut EP is an all-round feelgood indie record, which is bound to have you clapping your hands, and stomping your pigeon-toed feet” (247 Magazine)

Section 60

March 16th, 2011
section_60_outdoor_pub Section 60 are a 5 piece indie/alternative band from Sheffield who produce an intense, big noise with comparisons made to the Verve at their melodic best, Oasis and Kasabian. Launching their debut album in Spring 2010, “Is This Our Day in the Sunshine?” was an instant hit with fans and since then they’ve been selling out venues of all sizes including a capacity crowd at the Plug Sheffield.
They’ve become one of the biggest bands in the Sheffield Music Scene and are well on course to national stardom in 2011. With over 50 gigs in 2010 including a tour of Germany, Section 60′s intense and big sound leaves you in no doubt that you have witnessed a band on the rise.

March 10th, 2011

This is just a taster of what’s to come, and we can guarantee that there’ll be something for everyone!

We’ve been inundated with requests for stalls this year and we’re bursting at the seams so unfortunately there’s no more room but if you’re interested in running a stall in future years please contact us at stalls@nibleyfestival.co.uk – we’d love to hear from you!

Last Casanovas

March 1st, 2011

last-casanovas The inspiration behind the name ‘Last Casanovas’ comes from 18th century adventurer Giacomo Casanova. Although being renowned as a lady charmer, he was also well known as a poet, diplomat, philosopher, swindler, musician and even a spy. Last Casanovas are equally talented in the erm… music department.  Young and talented – not fair!  This Bristol based group are gaining some well deserved support and the word is spreading.  Playful and haunting lyrics with tight musicianship, they genuinely have a great future ahead of them.

In Like Flynn

March 1st, 2011

in-like-flynn-bw_0 In Like Flynn formed sometime ago, in some London suburb during a cold winter.  Since inception they have been performing around the capital pushing their personal brand of high energy Rock ‘n’ Roll upon unsuspecting onlookers. Music-news.com said of them, “The power from the four-piece was simply incredible… Frankly, this is why I come to live music; scary and edgy and about as ‘real’ as it gets. I was deafened, screamed at and I loved every second.”
In Like Flynn perform with cheekiness and as much honesty as possible.  Their live shows can only be described as an experience; an experience they’d like to share with you.

Green Space

June 17th, 2010
ben_javens_green_man

The Festival has been going for 4 years and we’ve been growing steadily and learning as we go. We’ve made some effort already to look at our impact on the environment, but this year we have been giving this more attention.

We want to make environmental responsibility integral to our growing festival and we believe that as we grow it is our responsibility to demonstrate awareness of our impact on the environment and how we can seek to minimise it.

The main areas of impact are:

  1. Travel to the festival
  2. Energy use
  3. Resource use

For us this is a journey – we’re only at the beginning but it’s a journey we’re committed to and we’re excited about the chance to make a difference. As a small start this year we’re doing the following:

  1. Green group – we’ve set up a “Green Committee” whose remit is to ensure that we don’t lose sight of the environmental issues
  2. Carbon offsetting – we’re investigating a local tree planting scheme
  3. Recycling – all food and drink containers are recyclable/biodegradable; there will be recycle bins on site
  4. Education – Gloucestershire County Council’s Recycle for Gloucestershire team will be on hand in the family area with some craft activities and information about composting
  5. Promoting sustainability/sustainable lifestyles – for example information on the Transition movement, permaculture and microgeneration of energy will be available in the Green Space

What Can You Do?

  1. Think about how you travel to the festival - can you fill up your car with friends, or car share? Nibley has teamed up with www.gocarshare.com – why don’t you register and use the service?
  2. Use the recycling facilities provided – these will be clearly marked
  3. Come and visit our lovely green chill out space and stalls for more information about what you can do when you go home.

Thanks to illustrator Ben Javens for the use of his Green Man logo for our Green Space.

Camping guidelines

June 17th, 2010
  • Camping tickets must be purchased in advance and will not be available on the day of the festival.
  • The camp site opens at 6pm on Friday 6th July, and must be clear by 1pm on Sunday 8th July.
  • On arrival, please follow the signs to the campsite entrance you will be asked to show your tickets or PayPal receipt.
  • Wristbands will be issued at the campsite entrance from 6-10pm on Friday and at the main festival entrance from 9am on Saturday. If you are arriving on Saturday, you can pick up your wristbands after pitching your tent.
  • Part of the campsite will be designated as ‘Family Camping’ for those with children who prefer a quieter area.
  • Campervans will be directed to the campervan area, which is adjacent to the campsite. Campervans are not permitted to park on the campsite.
  • SIA registered security staff will patrol the campsite both during the festival and on both nights, but please don’t leave valuables unattended at any time.
  • You will be asked to pitch your tent in the marked lanes.
  • Once unloaded vehicles must be parked in the adjacent Campers’ Car Park.
  • At peak periods campers may be asked to park in the Campers’ Car Park and walk their tents etc to the adjacent campsite.
  • Campers must attach the Camping wristband to a prominent place on their tent or campervan.
  • There will be barbecue food and a bar at the campsite on Friday night.
  • Breakfast and newspapers will be available on Saturday and Sunday morning on the campsite.
  • The North Nibley Village shop (a general store, newsagent and Post Office with a vast range of items for sale) is open on until 6pm on Friday and Saturday and Sunday mornings from 9am until 12 midday.

  • From Car Park to camping spot:  In common with all other major festivals and in order to comply with our Health and Safety regulations, all vehicles and tents will be separated. At the discretion of the site steward you may be allowed to unload your vehicle at your designated or chosen pitch but the vehicle MUST be removed to the designated car parking area for the camping site after this.  Site Stewards and security will enforce this requirement.  N.B In the event of large numbers of vehicles arriving at the same time it may not be safe or practical to allow vehicle entry into the camping field. The campsite layout is designed specifically so that you should be able to park within a reasonable distance of your camping spot, but please bear in mind that the actual distance cannot be absolutely guaranteed.
  • Pitches: Please be considerate when pitching your tent. The site will be marked to denote camping lanes and fire corridors. Please pitch your tent either side of the clearly marked camping lanes.  For fire safety reasons and to retain a degree of privacy please leave a 3 metre gap between yourselves and the adjoining tent.
  • Toilets There will be portable toilets available on the camping site and on the festival site. Please report any problems to the festival HQ or any Steward.
  • Showers: None provided.
  • Water: There will be drinking water points on the campsite. We recommend that you bring supplies of bottled drinking water with you for convenience.
  • Power: There are no power points available in the camping area. Generator powered lighting will be provided around the toilet block(s). Please bring a torch!
  • Fires: Because of the risk of fires spreading and damage to grazing on this working farm, OPEN FIRES ARE BANNED everywhere on site. One small purpose made barbecue may be used as long as it is raised off the ground on a purpose-built stand and does not damage the grass. No accelerants (flammable liquids) may be used to light barbecues.  A bucket of water or fire extinguisher must be close at hand and no barbecue may be left unattended until extinguished. Gas cylinders for gas cookers must be stored safely.
  • Animals: No animals except guide dogs are permitted on the camping or festival site.
  • Noise: No sound systems, amplified music, stereos or drums are allowed on site. Those who disregard this regulation will have their equipment confiscated or be asked to leave the site. A family/quiet area will be designated within the camping field. Please keep noise to a minimum in all areas and respect the festival’s neighbours and fellow campers.
  • Waste disposal: Please use the bins provided. The site is a working farm and litter/waste poses a hazard to livestock and wildlife.
  • Security:  A site Steward and/or SIA licensed security contractor will be based at the camping site at all times. Please do not leave valuables in your tent or vehicle. Your property is left in the camping area at your own risk. The festival also has a community police officer presence. If you are in possession of illegal substances you may be arrested.
  • Glass/Alcohol: No glass bottles are allowed on any part of the festival site, including the camping area. You may bring a personal supply of alcohol with you into the camping area (cans or decanted into plastic bottles, please), but you will not be able to bring it into the festival site. However, please note that the festival management has the right to refuse entry to the festival site on the grounds of unruly behaviour or apparent severe intoxication.
  • Children: Do not leave children unattended in the camping area.
  • Campervans: There is a separate area for campervans and caravans adjacent to the main campsite.
  • We reserve the right to ask those who do not comply with these requirements to leave the festival or camping site.

And more…

June 15th, 2010

A selection of acts will be performing short sets in the more intimate atmosphere of the beer tent. These will include:

  • Ben Powell – Fusing modern acoustic music with 60s folk and a Celtic / North African twist.  All delivered with passion, power and soul.
  • Cleo Tighe – Cleo has appeared in various venues across Manchester as well as Breakfast TV twice and has recently been booked to perform in Madison Square Gardens famous Tirnanog’s restaurant. Now 15, she would describe her music as based around Indie Pop.
    myspace.com/cleotighe
  • Dead Dog Cider – They rose Phoenix like from the ashes of the legendary Old Spot Pickers. Pru (vocals, bodhrán) and Mark (vocals, guitar) play a lively mix of English, Celtic and American song including all the old table thumping favourites.
  • Inkerman Street – An alternative mix of Indie rock and ska rhythms, Inkerman Street are based in Stroud but with local girl Molly on lead vocals. They’ve been gigging around Gloucestershire for around a year and are as happy playing chilled out acoustic sets in Kane’s Record Store as they are tearing it up in the Stroud Sub Rooms. Tonight they plan to make some noise.
    myspace.com/inkermanstreet
  • Macaroni Penguins – They headlined the first ever Nibley Festival and some say they made it what it is today.  They are back for a cameo appearance and Tim has bought a Cajón especially for the occasion.  Expect a slightly more acoustic set, but still not a good time for a quiet drink in the bar.
    macaronipenguins.co.uk
  • The Portraits – “Overflowing with promise and passion” DAILY VAULT… The Portraits are an Anglo-Irish duo who produce sonic tales of adult life, the world, sorrow and laughter, through their unique brand of cosy acoustic pop based around beautiful vocal harmonies and ethnic tinges.
